Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, a 13-storey super-specialty healthcare facility in Powai, has been awarded the US Green Building Council’s LEED v4.1 O+M: Existing Buildings Platinum certification. This makes the hospital one of the few healthcare facilities in India to achieve the highest level of recognition for sustainable operations.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a global green building certification initiated by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and administered in India by the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI). Platinum is the highest rating, recognising sustainability, efficiency, and human well-being.
Spread across 310,110 sq. ft., the hospital has incorporated sustainability as part of its functioning. Measures include rainwater harvesting, optimised water use, energy-efficient lighting, and advanced HVAC systems. Solid waste is managed through an in-house Organic Waste Converter, while biomedical waste is disposed of responsibly. The hospital also follows practices such as green cleaning products and strict hygiene.
Other initiatives include advanced water metering, no-smoking policies, responsible purchasing policies, and renovation practices. The hospital is preparing to meet a significant part of its energy needs with rooftop solar. It has also collaborated with Tata Power Trading Company Ltd. to install a smart energy optimisation system that uses real-time data and predictive modelling to reduce energy consumption, while maintaining air quality and patient comfort.
“Sustainability has long been integral to our long-term vision, and the recognition reaffirms that we are going in the right direction. For us, care for patients and care for the environment go together, and we feel proud to be one among a few hospitals in India to have reached this milestone. This journey is our commitment not only to those who come through our doors, but to the greater community and future generations as well. We will keep innovating, embracing cleaner technologies, and raising the bar on what healthcare can do when led by compassion and consciousness,” said Dr Sameer Kulkarni, CEO, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai.
“Congratulations to Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital on achieving LEED v4.1 O+M Platinum – a milestone that reflects exemplary leadership in India’s healthcare sector. Hospitals operate 24/7 and are among the most complex facilities to decarbonise, yet this team has shown that data-driven innovation and disciplined operations can deliver real, measurable performance without compromising patient care. From smart HVAC optimisation and advanced water stewardship to responsible waste and procurement practices, Hiranandani Hospital sets a powerful example of how healing can extend to the planet. We are proud to recognise this achievement, and this will inspire hospitals across India to pursue higher standards of sustainability and health,” said Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director for Southeast Asia, Middle East & India at the Green Business Certification (GBCI).
