The committee will facilitate brain stem death certification in accordance with legal and medical protocols, supporting deceased organ donation and transplantation processes
Yashoda Medicity has received approval from the Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME), Uttar Pradesh, for the constitution of a Brain Stem Death Certification Committee.
The approval authorises the institution to conduct and certify Brain Stem Death assessments in accordance with the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) and established medical and legal guidelines. Brain stem death certification is a critical step in enabling deceased organ donation and supporting organ transplantation programmes.
The committee will be responsible for conducting assessments and certifying brain stem death cases through a structured process involving qualified medical specialists, as prescribed under the regulatory framework. The mechanism is intended to ensure compliance with legal requirements while maintaining transparency and consistency in clinical practice.
With the growing need for organ transplantation in India, strengthening institutional systems for deceased donor identification and certification is considered an important component of expanding access to organ donation and transplantation services.
Dr P.N. Arora, Chairman and Managing Director, Yashoda Medicity, said, “Brain stem death certification plays a vital role in the organ donation ecosystem. Establishing a dedicated committee helps ensure that assessments are conducted in accordance with prescribed clinical, legal, and ethical standards. Such institutional mechanisms are important for supporting deceased organ donation and helping address the gap between organ demand and availability.”
The committee will work in coordination with critical care teams, transplant specialists, counsellors, and hospital administrators involved in the organ donation pathway. It is expected to facilitate timely decision-making and adherence to regulatory requirements throughout the certification process.
Dr R.K. Mani, Director, Clinical Services, Yashoda Medicity, said, “Brain stem death certification is an important responsibility within critical care practice, requiring adherence to defined medical and legal protocols. Structured frameworks help ensure consistency in the certification process and support the broader organ donation system. They also contribute to public awareness and understanding of the processes involved in deceased organ donation.”
