Eli Lilly and Company (India), in partnership with the Association of Physicians of India (API), has launched a national Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled ‘API – Obesity Gurukul’. The initiative is designed to support physicians in developing clinical competencies to manage obesity, which has become a significant public health issue in India.
Modelled on the traditional Gurukul system, the programme will offer a structured educational experience to more than 20,000 healthcare professionals across over 10 cities. It will include in-person sessions delivered through API’s state chapters and digital modules to provide consistent and accessible training. The programme content will focus on the pathophysiology of obesity and evidence-based approaches to its treatment.
“Obesity is a complex, chronic condition that requires more than just treatment—it demands continuous medical education, empathy, and coordinated action across the healthcare ecosystem,” said Dr Manish Mistry, Senior Medical Director, Eli Lilly and Company (India). “Our partnership with the Association of Physicians of India (API) on the Obesity Gurukul programme reflects our commitment to advancing clinical excellence and reshaping how obesity is understood and managed in India. By equipping physicians with the latest scientific insights and best practices, we aim to strengthen the quality of care and support better outcomes for people living with obesity.”
Dr Jyotimoy Pal, President of API, added, “Obesity is no longer a lifestyle issue—it is a disease with deep clinical, psychological, and economic impact. The Obesity Gurukul programme is an important step toward empowering physicians to recognise and treat obesity as a chronic condition.”
