KPMG International has released a new report titled “Intelligent Healthcare: A Blueprint for Creating Value Through AI-Driven Transformation”, offering strategic guidance for healthcare organisations navigating artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. The report is part of a broader eight-part series based on global research with nearly 1,400 industry leaders across sectors, including healthcare.
This healthcare-focused report draws on insights from 183 global executives and proposes a structured, three-phase model — Enable, Embed, and Evolve — to guide healthcare organisations from initial AI pilots to enterprise-wide integration.
The report outlines four strategic recommendations for healthcare systems:
First, healthcare organisations are encouraged to design AI strategies aligned with their core clinical and operational competencies. These strategies should aim to enhance patient and workforce experiences, improve population health, and reduce costs. The report advises that AI initiatives be prioritised around diagnostics, administrative automation, and personalised care, with emphasis on scalability, interoperability, and impact.
Second, the report underscores the importance of building trust into the AI implementation roadmap. It recommends the use of transparent, explainable AI (XAI), the establishment of ethical governance structures, and strong adherence to regulatory compliance.
Third, fostering a culture that enables AI to enhance — rather than replace — human potential is critical. According to the report, half of the healthcare leaders surveyed say their organisations are currently developing a long-term vision for how AI can support transformation over the next five years.
Fourth, the report calls for the development of sustainable technology and data infrastructure. This includes modernising legacy systems, consolidating fragmented data, and enabling real-time integration with AI tools.
Dr Anna van Poucke, Global Head of Healthcare, KPMG International, commented, “AI has the potential to fundamentally reshape healthcare — not by replacing the human touch, but by enhancing it. By integrating AI across different clinical and community settings and different operational streams, we can improve outcomes, ease the burden on healthcare workers, and create more resilient, patient-centered health systems.”
Lalit Mistry, Partner and Co-head, Healthcare Sector, KPMG in India, added, “AI is no longer a future promise — it’s a present imperative. By embedding intelligent technologies into clinical and operational workflows, healthcare organisations can unlock transformative value, improve outcomes, and build more resilient, patient-centered systems. The key is aligning AI with core value streams to ensure it drives measurable impact across the entire gamut of care.”
The report also notes that the future of healthcare will rely on building intelligent, AI-enabled ecosystems focused on prevention, early intervention, and coordinated care. It highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, supported by AI, and calls on leadership to act now by creating enterprise-wide AI strategies, preparing the workforce, and delivering initiatives that yield system-wide value.
