The Texas Kidney Foundation (TKF) is taking action to address chronic kidney disease which affects many in our community and across the state of Texas. Today, the Texas Kidney Foundation launches the “Silent But Deadly” multimedia public awareness campaign coinciding with National Kidney Awareness Month and World Kidney Day. The campaign launches in San Antonio and is slated to expand throughout other regions of the state of Texas over the coming months.
An important part of the “Silent But Deadly” movement is the introduction and distribution of a new kidney screening technology which allows for in-home kidney screening. The kidney screening kits will be made available free to the initial 10,000 online requests on the campaign website – www.silentbutdeadly.org.
One in seven people suffer from chronic kidney disease and 9 out of 10 people don’t know they have kidney disease because there are no symptoms. It is a silent killer. Oftentimes, kidney disease is diagnosed at advanced stages which can result in the need for dialysis or transplant, both of which can be avoided if detected early.
“These numbers are particularly high among Hispanic and African American populations with chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity,” said Texas Kidney Foundation CEO Tiffany Jones-Smith. “Kidney disease is not only an underlying condition that adds complications for those who contract COVID-19, but COVID-19 also damages the kidneys.” Jones-Smith has lost 9 family members to kidney disease and has three diagnosed with it today.
The “Silent But Deadly” movement launched LIVE at 10 a.m. on the TKF Facebook page with a one-minute moment of silence on March 11 at 12 noon, coinciding with World Kidney Day.
The “Silent But Deadly” campaign has received support from numerous community leaders including the Honorable San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, nationally-renowned transplant surgeon Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, and Texas Kidney Foundation Board Chair Anil T. Mangla, MPH, PhD., who currently serves as the epidemiology program management lead for the D.C. Department of Health.
