Secretary, DEPwD visits AMTZ and inaugurates SAGE Wheelchair unit – Express Healthcare

Rajesh Aggarwal, IAS, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), visited the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) and acknowledged its role in developing assistive technology, providing artificial limbs, and supporting para-sports players in their Paralympic journey.

During the visit, Aggarwal toured AMTZ’s facilities and interacted with startups incubated at the Zone that are working on next-generation assistive technologies. He also held discussions with the World Health Innovation Fellows on disability empowerment and accessible healthcare solutions. He emphasised the need for cross-sector collaboration.

“AMTZ is a unique medical technology cluster and its contribution in assistive technology and disability empowerment is commendable, and the Department looks forward to deeper collaborations with AMTZ to support Divyangjans across the country,” said Aggarwal.

The visit also marked the inauguration of the SAGE Wheelchair manufacturing unit at AMTZ. SAGE India, an organisation with 44 years of experience, will now manufacture advanced wheelchairs and assistive devices at the Zone, expanding India’s domestic production of disability aids.

Dr Jitendra Sharma, MD and Founder CEO of AMTZ, said, “At AMTZ, we believe empowering Divyangjans goes beyond technology—it is about dignity, opportunity, and inclusion. Through our Assistive Technology Centre, artificial limb programs, support to para-sports players, and skill development initiatives, we are building an ecosystem where innovation uplifts lives. The collaboration with DEPwD will further strengthen our shared mission to enable independence, employment, and entrepreneurship for persons with disabilities.”
